Vanessa Markov is the founder of Toronto-based Hits ‘n Giggles, a growing multimedia showcase of Canadian music, comedy, film, art, and photography. Without much prodding, Vanessa will admit she has been addicted to pop culture ever since she first watched YTV’s Hit List with Tarzan Dan some fifteen years ago. Before graduating from junior high, she was a self-appointed pop music spokesperson, barely avoiding suspension for selling band photos she’d printed off the Internet and writing adventures during class time about superstars falling in love with the girl next door. She brings us HnG Radio, which currently offers a wide range of music from the local, independent, and mainstream scenes, from pop to rock to reggae and more, and will soon also feature comedy clips, interviews, event news, and talk shows. In the ten years and countless phases since those early stirrings, Vanessa’s all-consuming obsession with mainstream entertainment has matured into her passion, led by a lasting fascination for the performing arts and the desire to support local artists with that special star quality. On top of covering a wide range of live events, reviewing albums, and conducting interviews for online magazines, Vanessa enjoys collaborating with artists, publicists, and promoters alike to help arrange shows, press kits, and business partnerships, or to simply keep everyone organized and on track. She sums up her motivation for Hits ‘n Giggles as follows; “We direct all of our focus and energy toward expressing our love for the arts and entertainment we have grown to respect as essential to our community, united under one simple philosophy: Do what makes you happy and support those who do the same.”
