Comprehensive deal covers internet streaming of music from Universal, Warner, Sony, EMI, and more than 1000 independent labels

Toronto, January 24, 2012: Toronto-based digital music company Mediazoic today announced a deal with the AVLA (Audio-Video Licensing Agency), which will allow Mediazoicʼs internet radio network to carry the music catalogues of more than 1000 record companies representing the majority of all sound recordings and music videos produced and/or distributed in Canada.

Based out of a radio and record production studio in downtown Toronto, Mediazoic makes software that allows both individuals and commercial organizations to create, customize and curate their own internet radio stations. The system keeps track of all “listens” throughout the network, allowing royalties to be paid not only to the creators and rights holders of the music, but also to other stakeholders in the music ecosystem.

Current station hosts on the Canadian-owned-and-operated internet radio network include renowned deejay Alan Cross, iconic Toronto live music venue Hugh’s Room, annual music festival Indie Week, and local hip hop MC and artist MC FÜBB.

Cross, whose Weekly Top 11 show is unveiled every Friday on the network, has high praise for what Mediazoic’s unique take on internet radio has done for him. “Mediazoic’s resources have been a big help to my website, driving both traffic and time spent.” he enthuses, “Everyone should give the company a look.”

The network also has several radio shows in development, which will benefit from the wide range of music that this deal opens for Mediazoic and its listeners. One such show is hosted by established music journalist Karen Bliss, who will be resurrecting her popular interview show Lowdown, a one-hour comprehensive “this is your life” type show. Lowdown, Bliss’s music industry brand, has appeared in all kind of incarnations: a Canadian music industry column, an online radio show, a TV segment on Inside Jam, a TV show on Bite TV, and a music seminar. Through these formats, she has covered hundreds of artists, including Avril Lavigne, Billy Talent, Nelly Furtado and Sum 41.

“Our listeners know that every one of our stations has been playing great music since our launch last year.” says Mediazoic founder Greg Nisbet, “but let’s face it, now that our station hosts can throw a bit of Joni Mitchell, K’naan or Leonard Cohen into the mix, the listener experience is going to get a whole lot better. Our aim has always been to capture some of the magic that happens between people when great music is created and heard, and spread that magic across the digital realm, so we’re really excited about all of the wonderful collaborations that this deal will allow us to explore.”

“Weʼre pleased to work with Mediazoic, which will ensure that all of our members, whether they represent emerging or established artists, benefit equally from “plays” on this innovative new network,” says Graham Henderson, President of AVLA and Music Canada.

The deal between Mediazoic and AVLA covers reproduction rights. Mediazoic is also working with Re:Sound, the Canadian not-for-profit music licensing company that licenses recorded music for public performance, broadcast and new media to cover performance rights. “Weʼre always happy to work with innovative companies like Mediazoic to ensure that music creators are fairly compensated within emerging business models.” said Ian MacKay, Re:Soundʼs President.

Bray summarizes the initiative as follows: “Working with Chris and Mediazoic promises to be a great deal of fun – I’m very excited about the possibilities. As the radio and recording worlds continue to evolve, partnerships such as this one that build bridges between established people and organizations and their innovative successors are a key path to the future.”

Setting up shop in Bray’s state-of-the-art studio will allow Mediazoic to capture exclusive, premium-quality performances of artists that Mediazoic promotes on its network of Internet radio stations and through its other digital and physical networks. With the help of Canadian music man Serge Sloimovits, Mediazoic will also offer in-house artist development services, such as applying for funding on behalf of a carefully-curated selection of artists.

Birkett, previously based out of his own studio in Paris, France, sees the venture as an opportunity to get a handle on Canada’s thriving independent music scene. “Internationally, Canada is known as a real hotbed of talent. As an artist, I’m really excited about some of the collaborations that will result from this, and as an engineer and producer, I can’t wait to share some tricks of the trade that I’ve learned over the years with some up-and-coming Canadian artists.”

Studio facilities include 128 Channel Pro Tools HD Accel 3 w/Pro Tools 8 software, Logic Pro 9, Digidesign Digi Translator, Massive SFX Library and Digital Plug-ins, Tama Swingstar Drum Kit with DW pedals and SoundEdge hats, every size and shape of electric and acoustic guitar, over 50 world music instruments (oud, tablas, sitar, harmonium, zither, bouzoukis, etc), microphone preamps (Avalon 737, Focusrite Blue 215, Focusrite Quad), a variety of microphones (Neumann U87s, RE 20s, AKG 451, Sennheiser 441/Evolution600, Rode NT5 Matched Pair, SM57s), Digidesign Control 24 Mix Control Surface, Yamaha S90 88-Key Weighted Action Synthesizer, and much more.

Greg Nisbet, founder and CEO of Mediazoic, sees the move as a giant step forward for the company. “If someone had told me a few months ago that an upstart company like Mediazoic would soon be sharing studio space with two industry legends like David and Chris, I’d never have believed it. I can’t count how many times we’ve witnessed a stunning live performance or been in the middle of a really amazing conversation and wished we had a way to capture the magic of the moment. Multi-faceted deal covers internet streaming of music from twenty of Canada’s leading independent record labels.

Mediazoic and the Independent Digital Licensing Agency (IDLA) today announced the formation of a strategic partnership, which will see IDLA license the music catalogues of twenty independent Canadian music labels for streaming on Mediazoic’s internet radio network. IDLA members will also be able to create and monetize their own content streams on the Mediazoic system, enabling promotion of their music across a variety of new media platforms.

Geoff Kulawick, Executive Director of IDLA, says. “Mediazoic’s new service provides a great opportunity for our members’ music to reach some very interesting and diverse audience segments. The real winners here are fans of independent music in Canada.”

Because streamers on the Mediazoic system decide on the music they want to play, it is important for their curated streams that a diverse catalogue of high-quality music is available for them to share with their listeners. The Mediazoic system keeps track of all “listens” on the network, allowing royalties to be paid not only to the creators of the music, but also to other stakeholders in the music ecosystem.

“It used to be that almost everything you heard on the radio was associated with one of the four major labels, but that is no longer the case,” said Greg Nisbet, Mediazoic’s founder and CEO. “These days, not only some of the best music being made, but even some of the best-known, is coming from independents. IDLA’s member labels represent a quality and range of music that proves that beyond any doubt.”

About Mediazoic
Mediazoic (http://www.mediazoic.com) is a network of carefully curated personal and organizational internet radio stations. It also makes software that allows individuals and organizations to broadcast and monetize audio-visual content in real time over the Internet. It is currently in private beta and is due to launch publicly in Spring 2011.

About IDLA
IDLA (http://www.idla.ca) is the first digital distributor established in Canada that is owned by a wide representation of independent labels and distributors. Twenty leading independent labels organized IDLA – The Independent Digital Licensing Agency to provide independent labels and artists more efficient and economic digital asset delivery to digital music services, royalty collection and administration through an organization whose financial interests are directly aligned with its independent artists and label members.

Interviews are presently being confirmed.

Partnership to include streaming of exclusive content through Internet radio and social networks

Mediazoic and The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame/Le Panthéon des Auteurs et Compositeurs Canadiens (CSHF/PACC) today announced the formation of a strategic partnership, which will see CSHF/PACC curate a stream of premium Canadian songwriting content on Mediazoic’s internet radio network.

“Few people, even Canadians, are aware of the depth of Canada’s rich musical heritage and the enormous impact our country’s songwriters have had on
contemporary music around the world.” said Dominic Denny, Executive Director of CSHF/PACC. “This partnership with a very exciting new service puts us in an ideal position to expose more people on more platforms to that deep well of Canadian songwriting talent.”

As part of the CSHF//PACC’s mandate to honour, celebrate and educate Canadians about the outstanding accomplishments of Canadian popular music songwriters, a special gala honouring inductees has been held annually since 2003, featuring live performances by a who’s who of contributors to Canada’s music legacy. Recorded in high-quality sound, these never-before-heard performances form the basis for programming a new, customized Mediazoic channel.

“As we build toward our launch this spring, we’ve really focused on content that will re-invent how listeners interact with radio and engage people in a new way.”
said Greg Nisbet, Mediazoic’s founder and CEO. “In that respect, these incredible performances that the folks at CSHF/PACC have put together dovetail perfectly with that mission. As a fanatical music fan myself, I can’t wait to dive in and explore.”

About Mediazoic
It also makes software that allows individuals and organizations to broadcast and monetize audio-visual content in real time over the Internet.
About The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) /Le panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens (PACC)
